The Spirit of Radio
The show was held in the former KFWB News Studios - which gave the show a totally new vibe.
Although the building is empty KFWB remains as a Hollywood broadcasting icon
The Making of the 11th Annual Hollywood Custom & Vintage Drum Show
To say it wasn't easy is a gross understatement. The 11th Annual show will go down in drum
show history as the show that never should have happened. It was only by the sheer will power and dedication of producers Kerry and Patti Crutchfield that this fantastic show came together. OK, maybe it was more than that...
The former KFWB radio building is slated for demolition. The inside of the building was a complete
disaster. The homeless had made themselves at home, the walls were covered with grafitti, the carpets had been soaked from leaks in the roof. It was not a pretty sight. Cleaning, painting, repairing and preparing the building was the easy part. Taking on the powers that be would prove to be the real challenge. City administrators and fire marshalls threw every conceivable curve they could muster. One day the show was good to go, the next day there was no way it was going to happen. At one point Crutch was told that if he went ahead with the show and appeared at the building he would be arrested. I'll never forget what he said to me one day after he got some of this bad news..."I told everyone there was going to be a show and dammit, I'm going to give them one!"
And that he did.
A radio station can be a pretty cool place to host a drum show, but this radio station was anything but cool. Time and $ ran out just at the point when Crutch learned that that the air conditioning system needed repairs - a LOT of repairs. The air quality inside the venue was as good as could be expected, but it got warm. Really warm. In spite of that, there really weren't any complaints. After a years hiatus, exhibitors and attendees where happy to have their show back.
So, here's to Kerry and Patti - for all the commitment, the time, the energy and the love,
Thank-you from a grateful drumming community and from me...

These were some of the coolest pies in the building.
Drumsmith's own Jerry Jenkins shared a spot with Joe Voda.
This proved to be the most impossible room to get any sort of photographic colour balance in.
Jerry broguht his coveted A.F. Blaemire kit and was kind enough to let visitors have a seat and play.
The bass drum was killin' everyone.

One of many gorgeous vintage kits at the show,
this Ludwig kit (with curved spurs and large classic lugs) was a favourite.
